Text Differences
Compare two pasted texts, line by line. Added, removed and unchanged lines are labeled; neither original input is transformed.
Compare before and after
Each input: at most 20,000 characters, 400 lines and 4,000 characters per line. Empty input is allowed. The comparison is limited to 160,801 table cells.
How comparison works
Exact mode compares each line’s text and terminator, including a missing final line break. Browser textareas can normalize CRLF/CR to LF before the tool sees pasted input, so this is not byte-level file comparison.
Ignore-whitespace mode removes ECMAScript whitespace from each line for matching and ignores terminator differences. Line boundaries and added/removed blank lines still matter. Case, punctuation and Unicode normalization remain exact. Equivalent lines show both originals when whitespace differs.
Changes use a bounded longest-common-subsequence comparison; ties prefer a removed line before an added line. Repeated lines may have more than one equally valid alignment. Next/Previous moves to contiguous groups of added/removed lines.
Comparison result
Focus the summary and select/copy with your keyboard if desired. No automatic clipboard, file or print action. Editing either input or changing mode invalidates this result.
Both texts are empty. There are no lines to display.
Enjoying Mike’s work?
Why does Mike offer these tools for free?
I believe useful tools should be available to everyone, regardless of income. As AI and other changes reshape work, people may lose jobs or face financial uncertainty. Access to practical tools should not depend on having money to spare.
People can help one another by making more services freely accessible. Mike Freeify is my contribution toward that goal, and I plan to keep expanding its collection of free tools wherever I can. If you choose to buy me a coffee, thank you.
Using these tools never depends on a contribution.
Help Mike continue this work by buying him a coffee.
Contributions are optional. These tools are free to use, with or without a donation. Each tool’s file and browser limits still apply.
